Sample itinerary · Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires & Colonia del Sacramento

7 Nights · Sample Itinerary

A week of leafy boulevards, neighborhood cafés, riverside escapes, and the quiet moments that end up becoming your favorite memories. This itinerary isn't designed to maximize the number of attractions you can check off — it's designed to help you feel like you actually lived in Buenos Aires for a week.

Restaurant Recommendations

Why there are no restaurant names here.

Every Waybread itinerary includes personalized restaurant recommendations based on your tastes, budget, dietary preferences, and the neighborhoods you'll already be exploring. We've intentionally omitted them here because they're one of the most personal parts of every trip.

Day 1 · First Impressions

Welcome to Buenos Aires.

After arriving, settle into your hotel in Palermo Soho, one of the city's most walkable neighborhoods. Rather than rushing into sightseeing, spend your first evening getting your bearings. Wander leafy side streets, admire the architecture, and find a neighborhood café or wine bar that invites you in.

The only goal today is to arrive — not just physically, but mentally.

Room to Wander

There are no reservations tonight. If your flight is delayed, you're tired, or you stumble across a lively plaza filled with locals, you should feel free to follow the moment rather than the itinerary.

Waybread Note

The first evening of almost every trip is intentionally light. We'd rather your first memory be discovering your neighborhood than worrying about making a reservation on time.

Day 2 · Palermo's Green Side

Ease into the city with a day among Buenos Aires' parks and gardens. Begin at the Jardín Japonés, then wander through the lakes and rose gardens of Bosques de Palermo before making your way back toward Palermo Soho for lunch.

Spend the afternoon exploring independent boutiques, bookstores, cafés, and shaded streets. Palermo is one of those neighborhoods where wandering often becomes the highlight.

Room to Wander

Nothing is scheduled after lunch today. Some travelers end up spending hours in a bookstore, others discover a wine bar they return to all week. This afternoon belongs to whatever catches your eye.

Waybread Note

We begin in Palermo because it's an easy neighborhood to settle into. Your first full day should help you feel like you've arrived — not like you're racing through a checklist.

Day 3 · Grand Boulevards & Hidden Stories

Today is about Buenos Aires' elegant side.

Start the morning at Recoleta Cemetery, where grand mausoleums tell the stories of Argentina's past. From there, continue to El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a century-old theater transformed into one of the world's most beautiful bookstores.

After lunch, make your way to Teatro Colón, widely considered one of the world's finest opera houses. Whether you join a guided tour or attend an evening performance if schedules align, it's one of those places that reminds you Buenos Aires has always punched above its weight culturally.

Finish the afternoon strolling Recoleta's plazas, quiet streets, and Belle Époque architecture before settling into a café for an unhurried break.

Room to Wander

This is a neighborhood best appreciated slowly. Sit outside with coffee, browse a gallery that wasn't on your list, or simply enjoy watching city life unfold around you.

Waybread Note

Many itineraries stack museums together. We prefer balancing history with neighborhoods so each day feels different from the last.

Day 4 · Where the River Slows Down

Leave the city behind for a day in Tigre, where the Paraná Delta begins.

Take the train north before boarding a boat through the quiet waterways lined with stilt houses, docks, and lush greenery. Browse the stalls of Puerto de Frutos, enjoy lunch along the river, and return to Buenos Aires in the late afternoon.

Room to Wander

The evening is intentionally left open. Whether that means a relaxed dinner close to your hotel or an evening stroll through Palermo, there's nowhere you need to be except wherever feels right.

Waybread Note

Tigre isn't here because it's famous. It's here because changing the pace halfway through the week makes you appreciate Buenos Aires even more when you return.

Day 5 · Across the Río de la Plata

This morning, board the ferry to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.

Spend the day exploring the cobblestone streets of the historic quarter, climbing the lighthouse, walking Calle de los Suspiros, and lingering in quiet plazas overlooking the river.

Rather than rushing back the same evening, stay overnight and experience Colonia after the crowds have gone home.

Room to Wander

Colonia rewards curiosity more than planning. Put away the map for a while and simply see where the narrow streets lead.

Waybread Note

Most visitors experience Colonia in a few rushed hours. Staying overnight completely changes the experience — the old town becomes peaceful, slower, and wonderfully atmospheric once the last ferry departs.

Day 6 · A New Neighborhood

Return to Buenos Aires around midday.

For your final two nights, move to a boutique hotel in San Telmo or Recoleta. Changing neighborhoods midway through the trip offers a fresh perspective on the city and lets you experience a different rhythm without ever leaving Buenos Aires.

Spend the afternoon settling in, exploring your new surroundings, and discovering streets that feel completely different from where your trip began.

As evening approaches, experience one of Buenos Aires' defining traditions with a tango performance in an intimate venue before lingering over drinks nearby.

Room to Wander

After the show, let the evening unfold naturally. Some of the best nights end with one more glass of wine somewhere you never planned to stop.

Waybread Note

We love changing neighborhoods on longer city stays. It makes one destination feel like two and encourages you to experience the city through a different lens.

Day 7 · The City You Chose

Spend the morning exploring San Telmo Market, browsing antiques, local crafts, fresh produce, and live music as the neighborhood comes alive.

After lunch, the city is yours one last time.

Return to the neighborhood that stayed with you throughout the week. Maybe it's Palermo's leafy cafés. Maybe Recoleta's quiet elegance. Maybe the riverfront in Puerto Madero, or perhaps a tiny side street you stumbled across earlier in the trip.

Finish your journey with a farewell dinner chosen specifically for you — whether that's a classic parrilla, a neighborhood bistro, or somewhere most visitors never hear about.

Room to Wander

This final afternoon has no agenda because, by now, you know the city a little. We think your last memories should come from the places you chose — not the ones we assigned.

Waybread Note

Almost every traveler leaves Buenos Aires wishing they'd had just one more afternoon in a favorite neighborhood. We leave space for that on purpose.

Day 8 · Until Next Time

Enjoy one last coffee before heading to the airport.

Buenos Aires has a funny habit of making people think about coming back before they've even left.
